Weekly Update

busy-calendar

What have I been up to this week? Well…

Counting Coins

See, now this is the problem with shift work. When you work nights, your body can’t process what the Hell you’re doing to it. Your brain wants to be sleeping, but instead it’s swimming in caffeine for way, way too long. This leads the brain to do all sorts of silly things. Things like upgrade garrison buildings, for example. I used some of the amassed gold from the week to upgrade some of the shacks. This was a mistake in the grand scheme of things. For example, I upgraded a War Mill to Level Three. All that did was give me a daily with a reward of either a weapon or armor upgrade for a follower. A bit of a waste, given the cost.

Now what I should be doing is upgrading the Barracks to Level Three. This will raise the follower cap from 20 to 25. More followers, more missions, more gold. But a few of my characters aren’t even at the follower cap yet so there’s no point in upgrading their barracks.

Still, Friday being the end of the week and all I decided to count coins and see how much I made, even after the random building upgrades.

Lo and behold, my total for the week turned out to be 23,648gp! That extra garrison is clearly paying off.

Objectives

Like I said in a previous post, in the past month I’ve gone from having zilch on my to do list, to being completely swamped. Since I’ve been working nights, my WoD time has been limited to maybe an hour or so per day. I’d worked on the lumber mill to build resources on some characters, tried to build a super team of followers, and banged out some Harrison Jones missions to get ever so much closer to having him as my official follower powerleveler.

One night, my zombie brain thought it would be a good idea to get a Laughing Skull Orc mask for one of the crew. Gold and resources were spent on a Level Two trading post. Now with flying being a thing again, and unlocking it will involve three rep grinds, getting that post to Level Three is a good idea. The only issue is that I don’t know who will be working on unlocking flight. I may have to get another trading post.

So for the upcoming week, I need to:

  • Continue working on Harrison Jones missions.
  • Decide on a character who will work on getting the meta achievement for flight and start questing and exploring and so on.
  • Run more Heroics and get close to LFR raiding.
  • Playing on the Isle of Giants for the mount or pet.
  • Work on Transmogs.
  • Kill elites for gear upgrades.

Not enough hours in a day. Or week.

Lessons Learned

Let’s see, what did I learn this week?

  •  I need Harrison Jones in my life.
  • Custom groups are awesome. I’ve used them to get Harrison Jones quests when I didn’t have any in my own garrison. I’ve also used them to jump realms and farm trees for stacks of timber.
  • In a way, leveling quickly was a burden since I now have to go back and do old content that I tore apart a few times before. All that just for flight.

Never a dull moment.

Ding 100 Yet Again

While World of Warcraft players are fleeing the game like rats from a sinking ship, I can’t seem to stop leveling characters. At last count, I have now taken one Monk, two Warriors, two Hunters, and three Death Knights to level cap. I have one more DK who is tucked away in his bare bones garrison, gathering resources to buy xp potions should he get the leveling nod.

Damn, that’s a lot of Death Knights. That probably reflects on a whole post of other issues, ones I won’t get into here because content. (Stay on target — Editor)

Unlike Mists of Pandaria, which twists my guts into a knot so profound that it would prompt a sailor to give a thumbs up with his obvious erection at the sight of it, I have no problem with the leveling process in WoD. It’s faster this time around because there are so many ways to earn experience – treasures and bonus missions are the bomb-diggity. In fact, this may be the most number of characters I have at level cap since I started playing World of Warcraft.

Speaking of the physical distress I get from leveling through MoP, I have two characters currently sitting in Pandaria. I have no idea what I’m going to do with them, if and when I decide to take my final DK to the “promised land” that is Level 100ville. Will I boost them to avoid questing through MoP? Will I bother leveling yet another Warrior and Hunter up to 100 at all? Should I start a new class from scratch and see what life is like there?

It’s just too bad I’ve got nothing to do with them once they reach level cap. Guess there’s always transmog runs through old content.

Rokk Talk – Busy Weekend

The Main Monk was busy on Halloween weekend.

  • He got his Leatherworking up to 325, which was the goal. At 325 he could make the bind on pickup chest piece, Primalstorm Breastplate, for his new transmog set. It was the final piece that he needed to complete his look at Robin, the Boy Wonder.
    Holy Cornball, Batman!

    Holy Cornball, Batman!

Needless to say, Rokk made this look his own.

  • Rokk faced off against the Cataclysm Pet Masters and defeated them. Goz Banefury was the most frustrating, and there are currently talks to build the Battle Pet army to cover contingencies such as needing an actual variety of pets to beat the Battle Pet Tamers.
  • With Blizzcon 2014 coming this week, and Warlords of Draenor coming next week, it’s going to be a very interesting time in the near future.

    The Great Gold Making Hoax

Two of the most annoying questions I see in WoW are:

    1) How do I make gold?
    2) Can I have some gold?

    My answers to this are:

    1) Sell some shit that people want to buy.
    2) Sure. See Answer 1.

Everybody likes having cash in their pocket. For some, it’s a rainy day fund for buying potions and repairing their gear. Others like being able to hit the AH and upgrade their gear to the best money can buy. Oh, and buy sexy mounts and stuff. Gotta have the sexy mounts, right? Otherwise how would scrubs know you’re ballin’, playa.

It’s like riding a Porsche with gold spinner rims.

It’s like riding a Porsche with gold spinner rims.

Whether you’re searching on blogs, forums, or even Youtube, you’ve seen the title: “Earn X Thousand Gold in [Insert Absurdly Short Time Here]”.

It’s bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.

People who make those claims are often using “projected wealth.” They’ve picked up a rare drop, usually a transmog item, that according to some spreadsheet should sell for a small fortune. Post it up on the Auction House and wait for the cash to roll in.

Youtube is guilty of this, and the comments below the video reflect that. People will outright call bullshit on the video (like I am doing on the whole concept) because they’ve done the same thing, maybe even farmed the same gear, and after months of posting it they made a few hundred gold.

    People lie on the Internet?

    People lie on the Internet?

But there are still those sellers who swear up and down that they’re making hundreds of thousands of gold per month with various techniques. Huge transmog sellers, flipping, sniping the AH, they make it sound easy. It can be, if you have the server economy. Generally speaking, you’re looking at a long term time-investment if you want to make any kind of serious gold.

There is no magic formula to make a mountain of gold.

There is no single zone that unlocks your fortune.

There is no one profession that crafts cash.

Don’t get me wrong. Professions can definitely net you gold. Double gathering professions are nice to use while leveling, and if you keep them up as you level you can earn some decent gold. A gathering profession with a complimentary crafting profession (mining & blacksmithing) can beef your cashflow since you can gather your own crafting mats. More time consuming, but you save money while you make money.

Once you learn your market, you can start flipping items. You know what the regular going rate is on an item, so buy it out when it’s selling low and post it for the regular market price. People will dump things on the AH when they’re hoping for a quick resale, so if you’re patient you can swing some swag of your own.

If you’re the patient type, then and only then should you dip your toe into the transmog pool. A fortune can be made here, but it’s going to take some time. Plus, you need to know what to buy. Phat Lewts is a transmog wizard, who often posts market information that can give you an idea as far as where to start. Tailor prices as the market allows.

Making gold isn’t about earning X gold in Y minutes. It’s about research. It’s about knowing what sells, and for how much. It’s about knowing when to sell, and when to snipe from the AH. I’ve posted numerous “The Gold I Find” segments here to help people find various methods to earn gold. Playing the gold making game is the same as playing any other aspect of World of Warcraft – there are various ways to reach your goal. Find one that works for your playstyle and ride that puppy until the wheels fall off.

TGIF – Infinite Transmog Farming in AQ20

    Not just another pretty face.

    Not just another pretty face.

“I like my shit quick.” – New Jack, professional wrestler/gangster/bounty hunter/certified badass

I remember watching New Jack wrestle back in the ECW days. He was, and still is, a violent man. The halloween mask of scar tissue that he calls a forehead is a testament of the level of brutality he would take, just for the chance to dish it out.

How does that relate to World of Warcraft?

Like this – I hate transmog items. I like using them, but I hate farming transmog gear just to try and sell it. The money can be quite good, but expect items to sit up on the AH for a dog’s age. Watching transmog items sell is like watching snails screw. It takes forever to get the payoff.

    Oh baby.

    Oh baby.

If I’m going to put myself through the brutal grind of farming, I want it to be worth it. AQ20 has some of the more valuable transmog drops. Downside of that is that it’s a raid instance, which means long lockouts. But it doesn’t have to. Check out WTBGold’s video and see just how much farming brutality you can take.

I tried this recently and it works. You just have to make sure you don’t accidentally pull mobs that will start a chain reaction that results in bosses being pulled, locking you to the instance, preventing the reset, and going from an overall sweet experience to to “see you in a few days.”
