Patch 4.3 Lets You Play Dress-Up
In the upcoming Patch 4.3, players are finally going to be able to reskin their armor and weapons. There’s a few minor hiccups as to what you’re allowed to use, but for the most part you’re limited only to what you have in your inventory. I decided to get busy and get my hands on some cool weapons that I’ll be able to use the skins for. All this talk about using skins makes me feel like Wild Bill from Silence of the Lambs.
The downside is that I now need to spec into Single Minded Fury so that I can dual-weild two one-handed swords, thereby making me into one badass Sith Warrior.
Cataclysm – Gearscore on Viagra
As I was standing in the scorching sun yesterday, bartending for a friend’s sister’s wedding, I thought to myself – “I can actually feel my brain cells cooking like oatmeal in a microwave. There may be damage, and it could be permanent. Also, what’s my name again? Is that sweat or pee running down my leg?”
Clearly these were vital questions to consider. Especially that pee thing. For the record, it was sweat. Still kinda disgusting.
Somewhere amidst all that heatstroke and brain damage, my synapses fired in the direction of World of Warcraft. Maybe it was that giant sword I saw propped up against the tree (turns out it was an elderly man, my bad), but I began to reflect on a blue post I had heard mentioned involving the upcoming gear reset.
Cataclysm Gear much more powerful than WotLK’s
Since we’re only raising the level cap to 85 in Cataclysm, one of the goals is to pack as much content and gameplay as possible into the new 78-85 zones and dungeons. We don’t want the leveling experience from 80-85 to feel as if it’s only half of the content we’ve provided in the last two expansions. So, with that comes more substantial scaling of items and character power with each level gained. A level-82 character should feel significantly more powerful than a level-80 character, for example. There are some epic and legendary items from Wrath of the Lich King raid content which may take a while to replace, but chances are most of your gear will be replaced by the time you start running level-85 normal 5-player dungeons. The first rule of thumb, as usual, is that you’ll probably be focused on the stats most important to your class. If you’re, say, an Unholy death knight, you probably won’t be replacing items until the strength on the new gear outweighs the strength on what is currently equipped, even with gems and enchants considered. By the time this occurs you’ll also likely be incorporating the benefits of Mastery rating.
[…] The concept is very much the same as the previous two expansions. We expect players leveling new characters in BoA gear, questing greens and maybe even some dungeon blues to be able to head into either of the first two Cataclysm zones at level 78 and do just fine. If you’re wearing mostly quest-reward items, you can expect to replace them very quickly in Vashj’ir or Mount Hyjal.
When WotLK released, people feared it would be the Great Gear Reset of BC. Top shelf gear was being replaced by quest greens right out of the gate, and that had people, especially raiders, gnashing their teeth. However, when Wrath did finally release, the gear replacement was much more gradual. For people wearing purples, they could go quite a few levels without any kind of significant replacement. The populace was happy (or at least, as happy as World of Warcraft players get) with their gear progression, and the raiders embraced their bloated Gearscore and hugged it tight.
Cataclysm is going to throw that all out the window. Hello Burning Crusade release 2.0.
I took a peek at what’s going to be coming. I think Zarhym needs to give his head a shake, because it’s not only quest-reward items getting replaced very quickly. ICC Heroic 5-man drops are replaced be quest greens that can be obtained before players ever needed to run the Heroics.
Example: I took a look at the Cataclysm Item List and right at the top is a green quest item, the Barnacle-Coated Greataxe. It’s an Item Level 272 reward for the quest “Kliklak’s Craw“, which you can get at level 78. Conversely, the epic axe Herculano swings, the Tyrannical Beheader, is an Item Level 232 blade he picked up at level 80 from Scourgelord Tyrannus in Heroic Pit of Sauron. Kinda hits you right between the eyes.
Now my brain could very well be done like dinner (I don’t always drool like this), but I think this information puts a bit of a damper on Wrath for everyone until Cataclysm, not just raiders. Myself, I was trying to get some more Pit runs in to try and get another TB axe for Herc’s offhand. It’s probably the best weapon you can get outside of raiding (and the Battered Hilt). But after reading about the BC Greataxe, I don’t really care anymore. I think it’s going to be the same for many non-raiders. Why run the Heroics when you’re just going to replace the purples so quickly? Why grind emblems to improve gear, when your Gearscore will feel all fat and meaty after knocking out a few quests upon Cata’s release? You don’t need emblem gear to start out in Cata’s intro content, according to Zarhym. What’s the motivation to get any of it now, before the expansion releases?
Raiding guilds are probably going to become ghost towns now, because people would rather chew glass than have to deal with nine or twenty-four other folks potentially standing in the fire, hours at a time, hundreds of gold in repair bills, for days and weeks on end, only to replace that purple within a few hours of playing Cataclysm.
Non-raiders have no motivation to deal with PUGs just to get emblems or gear for the same reason.
The rabbit sitting on my desk makes a good point. Players have been waiting for the Cataclysm world events to start. I think this information started the ball rolling, because it’s cataclysmic for people making their way through Wrath.
Cataclysm Bunnys says – “Always wear a hat on sunny days”
This is Herculano. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
My Present Wasn’t Under A Tree

Now that the holiday season has begun it’s death spiral, all the presents have been unwrapped, and I curse the sweets and spirits that have punished my body over the past seventy-two hours, I can catch my breath (wheeze) and reflect on some of the in-game events I have been privy to.
Winter’s Veil
Haven’t done a thing. Not one present, not one snowball. Nada. Don’t care.
Dungeon Finder
Hello new best friend.
I’ll be honest, I have never been a big fan of groups. Guildie groups, the rare time it happened, were bearable because they’re a good crew (amazing for a guild our size) and forgiving to those who were more solo oriented. Don’t misunderstand, I know what to do in a group. I assist the tank, kill what needs killing, keep control of my pet when I’m using my Hunter. It’s just the people that annoy me sometimes.
Especially in PuGs.
Not so much with the Dungeon Finder. In fact, it plays to one of the more powerful drives in the WoW player base – Greed.
In the days pre-DF, you’d get a PuG and be picky about it. After all, it took time to put these things together and you essentially got one shot at clearing the instance for Emblems of Triumph. It could be slow, painful, and not very much fun.
Fast forward to the PuGs of the Dungeon Finder Era. Emphasis on FAST. First, it takes no effort on the player’s part to find a group. They simply queue up as the role they want to play, then carry on with their business until they get a tap on the shoulder saying “Excuse me, but your group is ready.”
Next, a teleport to the instance. No more summoning, no more waiting around for people to arrive. Everyone’s there at the same time, ready to go.
The pace of these things are quick. People like to rush through them so they can queue up for another one as fast as possible, getting the most emblems they can. It’s like they ducked into the bathroom to drop a deuce with their laptop resting on their thighs, and need to get their Triumph emblems before they flush.
This quick pace means people aren’t too picky. The Dungeon Finder ranks characters by gear, so people aren’t carrying lesser-geared toons through the instance, but they don’t sweat that dude with the less than amazing DPS. They just want to get through the instance and start a new one. I have yet to see anyone be kicked from a group for sub-par DPS.
Needless to say, I’ve been having fun with the Dungeon Finder when I’ve had the time to use it. I’ve been testing the water with my Hunter, just to get the hang of dealing with people. Some, like the druid who humped Rukgut’s wolf to kill some time, were more interesting than others.
Bloodybull, I will find you and you WILL be paying pup support.
Today, after stacking run after run through instances like a fleet of drunk sailors on a hooker during shore leave, I ended up with a few pieces of quality T9 Gear –
Those are the types of presents I can handle over the holidays. I’ve seen new content that I’m sure I’ll be sick of seeing. I’ve met horny druids and and silent drones who storm through encounters without saying a word. I’ve gathered gear that’ll be more than sufficient until the next expansion, and I’m gaining experience that can’t be shown on a bar.
These are a few of my favorite things.
Happy Holidays.
Progression
Back on the net, back in the game. New motivation there, strides to be made.
For example, Rokk has been doing it big in Wintergrasp.
He’s amassed enough enough of a bodycount to pick up an upgrade.
From there, he knocked off a couple of reputations: Exalted with Sons of Hodir and –
Gemmed some gear, shoulder enchant SoH, and put a new killing tool in Rokk’s hand, made by Rokk’s own hands.
All this in the past 24 hours. How was YOUR day?
Halls of Lightning

When you have multiple characters, you sometimes forget what they have and haven’t done as far as progression. However, I do know that Rokk appears to have gotten into the swing of the PVP concept of Wintergrasp.
He’s becoming quite the adept killer.
Now in the wee hours of the morning, when a call went out to run heroic Halls of Lightning, a still-blooddrunk Rokk answered the call.
With the band of merry guildies, Rokk went forth and began to lay waste to Loken’s minions.
Eventually, after crushing bodies beneath his feet, Rokk finally heard the words of the treacherous and deceiving Loken.
The battle raged, the body fell, and Rokk’s first heroic instance had been completed. What did he have to show for his efforts?
It wasn’t all about achievements. He did get an upgrade for his tanking set.
Success!
