PTR Updates for Death Knights… Again
Honestly, I don’t know why I bother posting this stuff. I’m probably the only one reading it because as near as I can tell, I’m the only one who still plays a Death Knight. Really. I don’t know why the apparent hate or overall disinterest with the Death Knight class. But hey, this is the 21st century. People are free to play dudes what wear dresses or laser chickens until the cows (or Taurens) come home. Hell, I might even start up my own Warlock to satisfy my need to have my nipples tweaked by succubus (succubi?). I am not one to judge people. My only purpose is to dislike them based solely on the fact that they exist.
Speaking of anti-social, sociopathic rants, how ’bout them PTR Patch notes! (Editor’s Note — This makes no sense. Also, take your meds.)
On February 23rd, the following updates were made to Death Knights on the PTR:
- Might of the Frozen Wastes to 15% melee damage (down from 20%).
- Icy Talons increases attack speed by 25% (down from 30%).
- Blood Plague and Frost Fever damage +15% (down from +30%).
- Howling Blast damage to primary target +8% (down from +23%).
- Scourge Strike damage +3.8% (down from 7.7%).
Interesting, but not surprising. Patch 5.2 PTR – Build 16634 will be released soon with the following updates:
- Blood Plague damage and AP scaling reduced by 12%.
- Frost Fever damage and AP scaling reduced by 11%.
Frost
- Howling Blast base damage was reduced by 13%.
- Icy Talons now increases melee attack speed by 15%, down from 30%.
- Might of the Frozen Wastes now causes all melee attacks to deal an additional 15% damage when wielding a two-handed weapon, down from 20%.
Unholy
- Scourge Strike weapon damage reduced to 135% from 140% and additional damage reduced by 9%.
But what does this meeeeean? It means it’s the Public Test Realm. It means Death Knights are so fine, they just need minor tweaks with a handful of their abilities. DK’s are fine. And so the testing goes…
Latest Patch 5.2 PTR Changes for Death Knights
My people, brothers and sisters, the Developers have been busy tweaking this and that on the PTR in hopes of maintaining the awesomeness that is the Death Knight class. Fear not. those among you who may be nervous at the thought. Remember that nothing is gospel until it goes Live (which could be next week for Patch 5.2), so take these adjustments with a grain of salt.
-
Might of the Frozen Wastes to 20% melee damage, up from 10%.
-
Icy Talons increases attack speed by 30%, up from 20%.
-
Blood Plague and Frost Fever damage +30%.
-
Howling Blast damage to primary target +23%. Damage to secondary targets remains unchanged. Note: the tooltip for secondary damage says 0.5 but it has been 0.8 for some time.
-
Scourge Strike damage +7.7%.
For clarification, is the AoE aspect of Howling Blast going to be increased by this 23% single target buff, or will the AoE coefficient be lowered to compensate?
Single-target buff. That’s what I meant by damage to secondary targets remains the same. However, in case it wasn’t obvious, these were all single-target changes. We haven’t completed AE, healing or tanking changes. Healing or tanking numbers look pretty solid overall though, so don’t expect much change there. (And feel free to disagree, but please provide some kind of evidence to back it up.)
I want to play Unholy!
We buffed Unholy early on in the patch and I did mention disease and Scourge Strike buffs as well.

Death Knight Solos Madness of Deathwing
Death Knights are awesome. Have I mentioned that before? Come up in conversation at all?
Mionee, a Death Knight from the server Auchindoun – EU, has interesting hobbies. She enjoys tinkering, playing with gems, and soloing raid bosses.
“Big deal,” a random mouth breather might wheeze. “Plenty of people solo raid bosses.”
Not end raid bosses from THE PREVIOUS EXPANSION, they don’t.

Best Death Knight Professions in Patch 5.1
I have been embracing my self-appointed role of Death Knight fanboy to a disturbing degree as of late. I’m levelling multiple DK’s, which means I’m not only a masochist, but I’m visiting the Noxxic website quite a bit. Noxxic has some great class guides, which definitely helps me crank out every drop of awesome from my Death Knights without getting so frustrated that I start gargling drain cleaner. Since I mostly run solo grinding/levelling encounters, I don’t really need to be all that cutting edge. I can live with respectable. I’ll check out specs and rotations so that while I might not be great, I’m good enough.
But ever since my Alliance DK became a member of the expensive and exclusive Brawler’s Guild, I thought I should tweak him as much as possible to avoid getting my ass handed to me by swamp donkeys like Bruce.
Anyway, while giving the Noxxic site a good once over I noticed something I hadn’t seen before. They have actually gone and recommended the best Profession for your class spec. Now the concept of “best” is subjective, but so is getting your ass kicked when you don’t have to and therefore makes the section worth a look. The Blood spec professions were no surprise, but what they suggest as professions for Frost and Unholy really surprised me. I’m not sure if I’ll drop the gold to relearn my professions (unless I can use those professions to make my gold back), but here is what Noxxic recommends:

With my busy University schedule, I have exactly one day of free time. In that day I shop, visit with family and friends, and kill things in World of Warcraft.
This was my Saturday of Slaughter.
