The Frost DK and the MasterFrost Spec
A few days ago, I was contemplating moving a character to a new server. I decided that one of my Frost Death Knights (I have three 85’s) would probably be the most likely candidate. So I picked one that had the most to offer – max professions, decent gear, and enough bells and whistles to make him both unique and interesting to use.
There was just one problem – his main weapon was a 2-handed sword.
If you have a Frost DK, you’re shaking your head in a knowing and understanding fashion. If you don’t, you’re wondering why the Hell I would mention something as stupid as what weapon he was using. Is it an ugly sword? Did it clash with his outfit?
Okay, let me try and spell it out for you. Much like a Fury Warrior using two one-handed weapons, a Frost DK with a two-hander is generally seen as sub-par. You can do it, there are talents in the talent tree that make the option available, but it’s just flat-out less DPS. In fact, one of the reasons many DK’s have had to switch to an Unholy spec is due to the lack of Heroic one-handed weapons available for DPS. Two-Handers do not deliver adequate DPS for a Frost DK, end of story.
What was I to do? He didn’t have the gold or mats to have a reasonable one-hander made for him, and there was nothing to be found on the Auction House. That put me in a bit of a Catch-22 situation. I would have to run dungeons (Normal or Heroic) and either hope for an adequate drop or earn the badges to buy a weapon. But to run them and not get booted I needed to do decent DPS, which meant I needed an adequate weapon, which put me right back to square one.
Or did it? I remembered experimenting with a somewhat controversial spec back in the day (and isn’t that what College is for – experimenting?). The spec – the MasterFrost Spec – put out some very decent numbers. This was a spec that involved reforging gear to Mastery, which was a flat-out buff to Frost damage. Your Howling Blast would hit like a nuclear bomb, and Frost Strike would hit like a sizeable truck. Obliterate would barely show up as part of the rotation (gasp!). Could this be the workaround I was looking for?
After a bit of researching, I found some information to get myself set up. I logged in, reforged as much as I dared, and queued up for my first dungeon.
I never looked back. That’s where everyone else was on the Recount DPS meter – behind me.
I don’t know how effective this will be once 5.0 rolls over the Death Knight talent tree, so I’m hoping to have my DK geared somewhat properly by the time that happens. But it just goes to show, ONCE AGAIN, that there are different ways to play World of Warcraft. Try everything! You never know when you’ll stumble across something that really works for you.
Patch 5.0.4 Chaos
MMO Champion wrote in a post that Patch 5.0.4 had just hit the PTR. Most likely, this means the patch will be pushed to the live servers in 4-6 weeks.
Which also means that I’ll probably be done with WoW for awhile.
This is generally the exact opposite reaction of what most people will be doing. There’s a great number of World of Warcraft players out there who are salivating at the thought of the upcoming changes. The new hotness on the horizon, so to speak. Entire classes are being revamped (hello Warlocks). The talent system, glyphs, all being changed. In many cases, people will have to go back to the drawing board and hit the learning curve to play their class with any degree of competency once again.
Now me, I’m not a numbers guy. I sure as Hell don’t feel like sitting around in front of a targeting dummy to relearn what I’m supposed to be doing in the 5.0 era. Greater minds than mine are looking forward to that sort of thing, and more power to them. I’ve seen video footage from the beta regarding some of the upcoming class changes, and from what I can tell it’s not all that great news for my Frost Death Knight and my Warrior. Hence, I am somewhat less than excited about the changes.
Of course, I understand that things change from the beta, to the PTR, and to the live servers. But despite all the testing, major patches tend to bring major problems – from server issues to class bugs to general unbalance. If I wanted to deal with that kind of disorganized mess, I wouldn’t have to log into an online video game that I’m paying to play. I’d just leave my cave and step out into the sunlight. It’s kinda like paying for a massage and expecting a happy ending, but getting a surprise Brazilian Wax instead.
Personally, until the patch 5.0 dust settles, I’ll be keeping my head low and saving myself the headache until things sort themselves out. What about you? Are you looking forward to 5.0 going live?
Death Knight DPS Guide for 4.1
At the request of no one (except for Freaculano, which is almost like no one), I have included yet another class guide from the Manaflask folks – Death Knight DPS for Patch 4.1, by Daniie. This covers the two DPS specs (Unholy and Frost), and you should read it because Manaflask (Ensidia) knows what the Hell they’re talking about. If you think you’re pushing content, Ensidia has already bent it over and made dirty monkey love to it. So, well, just read and educate.
Back to Getting Down With the Sickness
Enough is enough.
The Rokk tried once again to kill that damn elite bird in the face, and once again fell short. So after checking the spec details, he specced back to Unholy. The result?
One dead bird. First time out.
The Rokk is sticking with Unholy. End of story.

Blood In, Blood Out
Thanks to Skeleton Jack’s blog, I found a good outline for a DK Blood Spec and decided to give it a try when Rokk dinged 66. He did, respecced, and have been killed twice by Gutripper while I managed to kill the other two Nesingwary elites as a 65 Unholy DK. The second time I dropped, he was almost dead himself. Not sure if that means anything, or if it was just a run of bad luck. I’m half-temped to spec back to Unholy and try the bird one more time.
After getting Blacksmithing close to 300, spending hundreds of gold in the process, I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have gone with Engineering instead. Maybe Rukgut will have to switch from Leatherworking.
Guess I’ll have to sleep on it for now.
