Blizzard Likes Surprises
Okay, I think I’m done playing the guessing game with these clowns.
As has been stated in various locations across the Internet, Blizzard has thrown out plenty of hints and comments regarding release dates for Patch 4.0.1, as well as Cataclysm itself. Much of that seemed to revolve around Arena Season 8. If that’s the case, then Boubouille believes Cataclysm will be released by December 7(?). He dug up some text that revealed that Season 9 will start on December 14. Zarhym stated in a blue post that Cataclysm will be released a week before the start of the new Arena Season.
It makes sense. Blizzard wanted Cata to drop before the end of Q4. It’d be great if they managed to get it out before Christmas. You know Bobby Kotick would love those Holiday dollars in his sweaty palms. But I know, and those who don’t have their head in the sand know as well, that on release day we’re going to be downloading a big patch. They’re still working on end game mechanics, and probably will be right up until the day Cataclysm goes live.
Patch 4.0 is the one I’m a little more anxious about. It affects how we play, how we make gold, and how we see the game. And by “we” I mean “me and my team of alts”. Early October was supposed to be the day of the Big Patch, but the downloader message has had the date removed. What does this mean?
At this point, I just want the patch to not screw things up when it comes. I don’t want a bunch of broken mechanics and bugs stuffed into my computer, just so they can reach a deadline. I want Patch 4.0, but I want to be able to start working with the content they give me. There will be minor patches of course, but hopefully they’ve got things “right enough” for me to start playing. It looks like they’re done with PTR tests with Patch 4.0.1, so October 5th as a patch day seems as likely as anything.
Whatever. I’m not holding my breath for the patches or expansions anymore. You can hold your breath, or Blizzard will hold it for you.
Not shown: Bobby Kotick and a whole lot of plastic wrap.
This is Herculano. You might as well enjoy the game now. The changes will be here sooner or later.
Blizzard Keeps Us Guessing
You just can’t believe what you read on the Internet.
Imagine my shock and dismay when I read that BB over at MMO Champion had changed his Cataclysm release date prediction. While he has never come out and said he has an “insider source”, it’s pretty obvious he does. If he didn’t, the most logical explanation would be that he had his own Psychic Hotline and would probably be pocketing millions through lottery winnings and sports betting.
Psychic Cat says -There’s either a large dragon in your future or your mama needs to lose a few pounds.
Cataclysm’s new Release Date: Early December (Dec 7 or 14).
The new release date is just vague enough to come off as more of a prediction, which is probably why he labeled his post as (Not Official), as if any of his information is (Official). It still looks like the expansion will be out in time for the Christmas rush, which means I know what I’m putting on my Christmas list.
Like I’d wait for Christmas to get the expansion.
After playing mischief with the release calendar, Blizzard decided to mess with us a little more. They decided that the citizens of Azeroth were looking a little on the husky fat side and that they needed to get some much-needed exercise. Therefore, the Faction Capital portals in both Dalaran and Shattrath will disappear in Cataclysm. No more free rides for the homesick, says Blizz. But to show they’re not completely without sympathy (when it comes to fat characters, at least), the portals will be replaced by Class Trainers and Auctioneers.
This makes no sense. Class Trainers and Auctioneers are the two main reasons people would go to the Faction Capitals anyway. Put those in Dalaran and Shattrath, and people still have no reason to leave. Good thinking Blizzard!
I’ve got everything I need right here.
This is Herculano, getting his exercise the old-fashioned way: Cheeto Curls!
Cataclysm Release Date – What Does It Mean?
The harbinger of doom has spoken from on high.
And by that I mean Boubouille from MMO Champion has released his forecast for Cataclysm’s release date.
Now that Patch 4.0.1 is on PTR, I get a lot of mails asking for a release date and I guess I can answer that without too much risk now.
Keep in mind that Blizzard didn’t announce it because the release can still be postponed, but as far as I know the target release date for Cataclysm is the first week of November (that would be November 2, if you like numbers). The first part of the Cataclysm prologue started exactly 8 weeks before that and the next part of the pre-Cataclysm event will probably happen in 2 or 4 weeks depending on their schedule.
You got your answer, and hopefully people won’t yell at me if something goes wrong.

Now I’m always skeptical when anyone from a non-official website starts passing along knowledge like it was gospel. I got heated last year when MMO Champion started telling folks that the new playable races were going to be Worgen and Goblins. This was based solely on the fact that they happened to datamine some new halloween masks. They released the information just before Blizzcon last year, which had Blizzard a little bent out of shape. MMO Champion had information (including the name of the as-yet-unnamed expansion Cataclysm) that they only could have obtained from inside sources. WoW.com was quick to pick up on this and pass along the information. My rant was based on the fact that nobody offered any solid facts, only theories, yet the masses gobbled it up like it was chocolate-covered awesomeness.
Of course, MMO Champion was right.
Do they have an inside source? Of course they do. They repeatedly drop “rumors” that turn out to be true. Even the wording of the release date doesn’t come off as something that’s speculation.
This time around, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. The proposed release date is November 2, 2010.
The question is this: Now that you have an actual number to deal with, what are your plans for that day? Will you start on the road to level 85? Start a Worgen or Goblin?
Myself, I may not even get the expansion on that day. There’s always issues on release, and the zones are going to be so packed it’s going to be hard to get anything done. With server crashes and zone lag, the first day will be insane.
What about you? Have you booked November 2 off yet? Let me know what your plans are in the comments below.
Cataclysm – Gearscore on Viagra
As I was standing in the scorching sun yesterday, bartending for a friend’s sister’s wedding, I thought to myself – “I can actually feel my brain cells cooking like oatmeal in a microwave. There may be damage, and it could be permanent. Also, what’s my name again? Is that sweat or pee running down my leg?”
Clearly these were vital questions to consider. Especially that pee thing. For the record, it was sweat. Still kinda disgusting.
Somewhere amidst all that heatstroke and brain damage, my synapses fired in the direction of World of Warcraft. Maybe it was that giant sword I saw propped up against the tree (turns out it was an elderly man, my bad), but I began to reflect on a blue post I had heard mentioned involving the upcoming gear reset.
Cataclysm Gear much more powerful than WotLK’s
Since we’re only raising the level cap to 85 in Cataclysm, one of the goals is to pack as much content and gameplay as possible into the new 78-85 zones and dungeons. We don’t want the leveling experience from 80-85 to feel as if it’s only half of the content we’ve provided in the last two expansions. So, with that comes more substantial scaling of items and character power with each level gained. A level-82 character should feel significantly more powerful than a level-80 character, for example. There are some epic and legendary items from Wrath of the Lich King raid content which may take a while to replace, but chances are most of your gear will be replaced by the time you start running level-85 normal 5-player dungeons. The first rule of thumb, as usual, is that you’ll probably be focused on the stats most important to your class. If you’re, say, an Unholy death knight, you probably won’t be replacing items until the strength on the new gear outweighs the strength on what is currently equipped, even with gems and enchants considered. By the time this occurs you’ll also likely be incorporating the benefits of Mastery rating.
[…] The concept is very much the same as the previous two expansions. We expect players leveling new characters in BoA gear, questing greens and maybe even some dungeon blues to be able to head into either of the first two Cataclysm zones at level 78 and do just fine. If you’re wearing mostly quest-reward items, you can expect to replace them very quickly in Vashj’ir or Mount Hyjal.
When WotLK released, people feared it would be the Great Gear Reset of BC. Top shelf gear was being replaced by quest greens right out of the gate, and that had people, especially raiders, gnashing their teeth. However, when Wrath did finally release, the gear replacement was much more gradual. For people wearing purples, they could go quite a few levels without any kind of significant replacement. The populace was happy (or at least, as happy as World of Warcraft players get) with their gear progression, and the raiders embraced their bloated Gearscore and hugged it tight.
Cataclysm is going to throw that all out the window. Hello Burning Crusade release 2.0.
I took a peek at what’s going to be coming. I think Zarhym needs to give his head a shake, because it’s not only quest-reward items getting replaced very quickly. ICC Heroic 5-man drops are replaced be quest greens that can be obtained before players ever needed to run the Heroics.
Example: I took a look at the Cataclysm Item List and right at the top is a green quest item, the Barnacle-Coated Greataxe. It’s an Item Level 272 reward for the quest “Kliklak’s Craw“, which you can get at level 78. Conversely, the epic axe Herculano swings, the Tyrannical Beheader, is an Item Level 232 blade he picked up at level 80 from Scourgelord Tyrannus in Heroic Pit of Sauron. Kinda hits you right between the eyes.
Now my brain could very well be done like dinner (I don’t always drool like this), but I think this information puts a bit of a damper on Wrath for everyone until Cataclysm, not just raiders. Myself, I was trying to get some more Pit runs in to try and get another TB axe for Herc’s offhand. It’s probably the best weapon you can get outside of raiding (and the Battered Hilt). But after reading about the BC Greataxe, I don’t really care anymore. I think it’s going to be the same for many non-raiders. Why run the Heroics when you’re just going to replace the purples so quickly? Why grind emblems to improve gear, when your Gearscore will feel all fat and meaty after knocking out a few quests upon Cata’s release? You don’t need emblem gear to start out in Cata’s intro content, according to Zarhym. What’s the motivation to get any of it now, before the expansion releases?
Raiding guilds are probably going to become ghost towns now, because people would rather chew glass than have to deal with nine or twenty-four other folks potentially standing in the fire, hours at a time, hundreds of gold in repair bills, for days and weeks on end, only to replace that purple within a few hours of playing Cataclysm.
Non-raiders have no motivation to deal with PUGs just to get emblems or gear for the same reason.
The rabbit sitting on my desk makes a good point. Players have been waiting for the Cataclysm world events to start. I think this information started the ball rolling, because it’s cataclysmic for people making their way through Wrath.
Cataclysm Bunnys says – “Always wear a hat on sunny days”
This is Herculano. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
Cataclysmic Events? Only For The Overdramatic.
I’d throw twenty bucks at this just to keep it from haunting my dreams.
It’s been a busy week, but to be honest I just haven’t been bothered. All week I’ve been listening to podcasts discussing the various class changes coming in Cataclysm. Some players rejoiced at the changes, others complained that everyone got something good expect their class.
Well that’s all well and good, but people tend to forget that these are not etched in stone. That’s what the Beta is for. The Dev’s will run these changes in-game and see what’s going to stay the same, what needs to be tweaked, and what’s going to be removed outright.
So before you fall in love with your upcoming talents, just remember this: Blizzard also promised you a Dance Studio. Nuff said.
You can find a list of the Cataclysm changes over at MMO Champion.
Space Ghost approves of this mount.
Yep, Blizzard added two more pets to their Store – Lil’ KT and the Celestial Steed. Once again, the player base lost their minds. The Steed, a full-blown mount that scales with your Riding Skill (both on land and in air), was the more expensive pet this time around at $20.
You know, I’m not even going to bother discussing this thing. I’ve covered this same, idiotic garbage when Blizzard did this the first time. The arguments haven’t changed at all, so I see no reason to rehash the same old trollop.
After looking at everything, there’s not a whole lot that needs going over. The big stories of the week were either things that may or may not happen in full, or have little impact on the game.
